Temporary Flow Diversion for Concrete
Channel Remediation, Staffordshire
Fowlea Brook required remediation works to an existing concrete channel, including the renewal of joints and application of surface treatments to extend the life of the structure
To undertake these works safely, access was required to both the channel bed and walls, necessitating the dewatering of the work area whilst maintaining flow through the watercourse.
The project presented an additional challenge as access was required across the full width of the channel. Our temporary flow diversion system therefore needed to maintain hydraulic capacity whilst allowing unrestricted access beneath and around the bypass arrangement for repair works.
High Water developed a temporary flow management solution using a 50-metre-long, 900mm diameter twin-wall bypass pipe installed within the channel.
Temporary dams positioned at either end of the work area diverted normal river flows through the bypass system, allowing the channel section to be isolated and dewatered.
To maintain access to the channel bed, the bypass pipe was supported on a bespoke cradle system designed specifically for the project. The temporary works design included hydraulic capacity assessments, thrust analysis and the design of bespoke movable supports, allowing the bypass pipe to remain operational whilst maintaining access to the channel bed.
Our team developed this solution to support multiple work locations across the scheme, with temporary works installations and reconfigurations planned to accommodate the phased remediation programme.
The temporary bypass system enabled channel remediation works to proceed within a dry working environment whilst maintaining flow through Fowlea Brook.
This allowed repair and coating works to be undertaken safely without requiring a full closure or diversion of the watercourse.
By combining temporary dams, a bypass pipeline and bespoke support system, High Water provided a coordinated temporary works solution that maintained hydraulic performance whilst preserving access to the full extent of the channel structure. This approach supported efficient delivery of the remediation works and reduced disruption to the wider watercourse.
