Limpet Dam Installation for Harbour Gate
Maintenance, County Durham
Seaham Harbour required specialist temporary water control to facilitate essential inspection and maintenance works on the harbour gates.
Working within a live operational harbour, the project involved accessing the gate pintels and roller boxes whilst coordinating multiple contractors, diving operations, lifting activities and confined space working.
A key challenge was the existing harbour structure itself. Formed from ashlar stone, with only historical drawings available, the condition and profile of the invert and connection points were largely unknown. This required a temporary isolation system capable
High Water designed, installed and removed a bespoke Modular Limpet Dam system to provide safe, dewatered access to the harbour gates.
By providing a flexible system that could be reconfigured across multiple work locations, High Water reduced mobilisation requirements and improved efficiency throughout the project. Close collaboration with the wider project team ensured installation, maintenance and removal activities were integrated into the construction programme, helping minimise operational disruption whilst maintaining the highest standards of safety.
The project demonstrates how specialist temporary water control solutions can overcome the challenges of ageing marine infrastructure, delivering safe access even where existing structures are irregular, unknown or difficult to isolate.
The adaptable design of the Modular Limpet Dam enabled critical maintenance works to be completed safely within a live harbour environment without the need for more extensive temporary works.
The limpet dam setup reduced the amount of plant, material handling, and watercourse disturbance that would have been required with a full-channel temporary dam. That translated into a cleaner site setup and a more manageable sequence for the delivery team.
By keeping the intervention focused on the asset itself, the client gained a buildable repair solution with less disruption to the surrounding environment and stronger control over cost, duration, and site risk.
