Flow Diversion Debris Screen
Upgrades, Manchester
Cheetham Hill Construction required temporary water control to facilitate upgrade works to the debris screen at Mauldreth Road, Manchester.
The project required safe access to both sides of the channel and culvert while maintaining continuous flow through the watercourse.
With limited working space and a phased construction programme, a temporary diversion system was needed to safely manage flows while allowing each stage of the works to proceed independently.
High Water designed and installed a phased temporary water management system using modular frame dams and a bespoke flume diversion arrangement.
During the first phase of works, temporary dams were installed upstream and downstream of the construction area, with a 30-metre run of 1200 mm rigid flume pipe diverting water safely around the isolated work zone.
The diversion incorporated two 45-degree bends to suit the site geometry, while a temporary debris screen was installed at the flume inlet to maintain system performance and reduce the risk of blockages.
Once the first phase was complete, the temporary diversion system was reconfigured to the opposite side of the channel, allowing construction works to continue while maintaining uninterrupted flow throughout the watercourse.
The phased temporary water management system enabled the debris screen upgrade to be completed safely while maintaining continuous flow through the channel, avoiding unnecessary environmental disruption and supporting efficient project delivery.
By combining modular temporary dams with a reconfigurable flume diversion system, High Water provided a flexible solution that adapted to each stage of construction, reducing programme delays and enabling safe access throughout the works.
The project demonstrates how carefully engineered temporary water control can simplify complex phased construction while maintaining operational and environmental performance.
